While you wait, we invite you to return to Iceland in November for the Friðrik Ólafsson Memorial 2026 – a special tournament organised in honour of Iceland’s first Grandmaster and former FIDE President.

  • 9-round Swiss system
  • Played over 6 days (24–29 November 2026)
  • Venue: Reykjavík Chess Club, Faxafen 12, 108 Reykjavik
  • Open to players with a FIDE rating of 2000 or higher (current or achieved earlier in 2026)

For yngre læsere kan vi fortæller, at Fridrik Olafsson (1935 – 2025) var en islandsk stormester, der kunne bide skeer med de bedste i verden. Han kom ikke helt op ved siden af den jævnaldrende Bent Larsen på verdensranglisten, men havde stor indflydelse på skakverdnen gennem organisatorisk arbejde. Fridrik Olafsson var præsident for FIDE fra 1978 til 1982, og blev sidenhen en højt respekteret aministrativ chef for det for det islandske parlament, Altinget.

Fridrik Olafsson var uddannet jurist og vandt det islandske mesterskab 6 gange.

Fotoet øverst i artiklen af Fridrik Olafsson er taget ved Senior NM 2013, der blev spillet i Allinge-Sandvig på Bornholm. En turnering GM Jens Kristiansen vandt foran netop Olafsson på en delt andenplads med Askell O. Karason og FM Jørn Sloth. Foto: Thomas Vestergård
